Keira's 5 year checkup

So, Wednesday was the day. March 17th, St Patty's Day...the day I have been dreading since Keira's 18 month appt. Keira's 5 year checkup which meant...more shots. :-( I am happy to report that other than the doctor was running way behind because of several emergencies, the appointment went really well! They are SO thorough and Keira likes her doctor really well. They tested her eyesight which was perfect - at least so far! They did a hearing test where she had to put on headphones and press a button every time she heard a beep. She passed that with flying colors, too. They also did developmental tests, asking her all kinds of questions like what kinds of things are opposites. They had her draw pictures and describe colors. The doctor also did a very thorough exam of her body, checking her eyes, nose, throat, ears, everything down to her toes. She did say her throat was a little irritated, like she might have some mild allergies but as long as it's not really bothering her, we don't have to do anything.

So, of course the time for the shots happens at the very end. I opted to only do two of the four vaccines, putting off two for next year, her six year appointment. After the doctor had finished with her exam, and she had done her hearing test the nurse came in and strapped this little thing that looked like a bumble bee on Keira's arm. It had a cold pack on it and it vibrated. They also gave both Keira and Mia lollipop's - I guess sugar has a way of tricking your brain into thinking it's really happy. lol That's what the doctor told the girls. Keira was happy because her sister was sitting right next to her, too. When the time came for the nurse to give the shots, she kept the buzzing bumble bee on her arm and just moved it up a little bit. The combination of the cold and vibration must numb it enough for her to not feel much at all because she just said, "Ow!" both times and that was it! Barely any pain at all, just more like a little pinch. Whew!! Keira actually told me she LIKED her doctors appt. and now isn't dreading the next time she gets vaccines. That made me feel SO much better. Plus, she got to pick out three stickers and a cool prize from the treasure chest.

As for stats, she is healthy and still holding strong in the 25th percentile for height and just under 50th percentile in weight. I praise God for such a great doctors appointment and most importantly, a healthy little five year old girl.
